NEW REGULATIONS BELOW!!

The  New Jersey Boating Safety bill that requires all boaters in our state to pass a boating safety course to operate most motorized vessels was recently signed into law. The law applies to all people age 16 years and older who operate registered vessels more than 12 feet in length. The law becomes effective over a staggered period of time.

  • Persons born after December 31, 1978 have to take the course immediately.
  • Persons born after December 31, 1968 , and on or before December 31, 1978 have to take the course before June 1, 2006.
  • Persons born after December 31, 1958 and on or before December 31, 1968 have to take the course before June 1, 2007.
  • Persons born after December 31, 1948 and on or before December 31, 1958 have to take the course before June 1, 2008.
  • All other persons need to take the course before June 1, 2009.

The new bill also states that “out of State” boaters 18 years of age and older who operate a power vessel for less than 90 days in New Jersey are exempt if they can show proof of similar education .

 Test Out Option

The State of New Jersey has approved a "Test-Out" option for all boaters who can document at least 100 hours of  boating experience, in lieu of taking the Boating Safety Course.

Applicants may take the Boating Safety Exam only once; if the applicant passes, he or she will be issued the required license. If the applicant fails the exam, he or she must take the approved Boating Safety Course as prescribed.

To arrange to take this exam, please contact the individuals listed  above for an appointment. There is a $25 fee to take the exam, which is not refundable .

NOTE: The State of New Jersey booklet of regulations given out at the class is no longer available in hard copy. We recommend that each student secure a copy via the internet at www.njsp.org.
